Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda. The Forest stands as one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically rich rainforests. Tucked in southwestern Rwanda near the Burundi border, this montane forest stretches over 1,000 square kilometers. It forms part of the Congo-Nile Divide and provides a vital watershed for much of the region.

Rich Biodiversity
Nyungwe hosts over 1,000 plant species, 75 mammals, 322 bird species, and 13 primate species. The diversity is astounding. Giant tree ferns tower beside wild orchids. Chimpanzee Tracking
Nyungwe is one of the best places in East Africa to track chimpanzees in the wild. These intelligent and social primates live in family groups and communicate with loud, high-pitched calls. Trekking starts early in the morning and can be fast-paced, as chimps move quickly through the trees and across the forest floor. The excitement of hearing them before seeing them makes the experience unforgettable.
Other Primates
Beyond chimpanzees, Nyungwe shelters many other primates. Look out for Angolan colobus monkeys, often in groups of over 300. L’Hoest’s monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, and blue monkeys also inhabit the forest. Each species brings unique behaviors and sounds to the ecosystem, making every hike full of surprises.
Birdwatching Paradise
Bird enthusiasts come from around the world to explore Nyungwe. The forest boasts more than 300 bird species, including 27 Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else. Highlights include the Great Blue Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco, and the elusive Red-collared Babbler. Many trails offer excellent vantage points to catch these vibrant creatures in flight or song.
Canopy Walkway
Nyungwe’s suspended canopy walkway offers a unique way to view the forest from above. Stretching 160 meters across a steep ravine, the walkway provides thrilling views of the treetops and valleys below. It’s a perfect spot for photography, birdwatching, and a bit of adventure.
Hiking Trails
The forest offers over 130 kilometers of hiking trails. Each trail reveals different aspects of Nyungwe’s ecosystem. The Igishigishigi Trail leads to the canopy walkway. The Umugote Trail offers views of distant ridges and valleys. The Kamiranzovu Swamp Trail showcases the forest’s wetland life. Trails range from short and easy to full-day treks, offering something for every level of fitness.
