Historical Significance
In 1520 AD, a solar eclipse cast a shadow over the Great Lakes region of East Africa. This celestial event, now known as the Biharwe Eclipse, holds a unique place in the annals of Ugandan history.
It is the only scientifically dated event from that era, giving historians a clear timeline to trace the region’s kingdoms’ genealogies and history.
The Buganda, Bunyoro, and Ankole kingdoms have deeply embedded the eclipse in their folklore.
According to legend, during a period of inter-kingdom conflicts, King Olimi I of Bunyoro was transporting war spoils over Biharwe Hill when the sudden darkness of the eclipse occurred. Interpreting this as a divine sign, the event led to significant shifts in power dynamics among the kingdoms.
