The reserve offers a rich variety of habitats, from tropical rainforests and savannas, making it renowned for its biodiversity and rich wildlife.

Background Of The Reserve

Semuliki Wildlife Reserve was established in 1993 with the primary goal of preserving the region’s unique flora and fauna. The reserve is crucial for protecting species native to the Albertine Rift especially those not found elsewhere in Uganda.

Semuliki is home to a variety of mammals, including elephants, buffaloes, warthogs and a range of primates such as baboons and colobus monkeys.

The reserve is also rich in bird species, with over 400 species recorded, including the rare shoebill stork.

The reserve is accessible by road from Fort Portal, approximately 40 km away, or from Kampala (around 300 km), with a journey of about 5 to 6 hours.

Conservation Role

Semuliki plays a critical role in the conservation of the Albertine River’s biodiversity, particularly by preserving tropical rainforests and the wildlife that depends on them.

The reserve’s efforts also include community-based conservation programs where these visitors come and take part, and these help reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote sustainable tourism.
