Directions to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Cyamudongo is a relatively new addition to the park, situated approximately one hour’s drive from the Gisakura receiving center, which is situated beyond Nyungwe’s primary limits.

This forest, spanning 19 square kilometers, is a remnant of the rainforest that has withstood agriculture due to its extreme steepness.

It is encircled by tea plantations and eucalyptus groves, where small homesteads and businesses are situated atop steep hillsides.

A rugged, dirt lane leads from Nyungwe’s main road to Cyamudongo, which requires a 4×4 vehicle. A detour to the park is taken at the Shagasha tea estate and settlement, about 11 kilometers in length.

Teams of trackers and rangers who accompany the trekkers during the day will meet with you there to provide assistance.

When to Visit

While there is year-round access to Nyungwe Forest National Park, the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) are the ideal times for most activities.

The trails are less muddy and offer better opportunities for seeing wildlife during these months.

But because of the rainforest climate, rain can fall at any time of the year, so be ready!
