It was established in 2005 as a collaborative conservation effort between the Rhino Fund Uganda and the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch.
The sanctuary aimed to re-introduce rhinoceroses to Uganda after they had been declared extinct due to heavy poaching during the Idi Amin regime.
