Among the many activities after gorilla experience in Africa  is the authentic village walks, scenic walking safaris, community school visits, local hills hiking, cycling with locals, cow milking and visits to ex-poachers community among many others.

AUTHENTIC VILLAGE WALKS

Short and long guided on foot walks are available for guests who are interested in visiting villages near the volcanoes national park in Rwanda, Virunga national park in Congo DRC or Bwindi national park in Uganda, freely taking photos, visiting people from their homes, local food preparation (from lighting a fire until food is completely prepared), Zither playing 9Inanga), weaving experiences, traditional dances and intore, grinding local cereals using a grinding stone, school visits to mention but few. The short on foot walk takes roughly 1.5 h ours and the longer one lasts 6.5 hours or more, depending on guests’ preference.

SCENIC WALKING SAFARIS & ADVENTURE BIRD WATCHING

Gecko Safaris organizes walk around the vicinity of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda national park, view abundant and diverse birdlife of Africa. This walk allow guest to physically exercise in preparation for the next activities including gorilla, chimpanzee, Nyiragongo, Bisoke, Karisimbi, Rwenzori & Sabinyo trekking adventure.

Community schools visit

We help guests to visit nearby nursery, primary, and secondary school. Guests learn about the African education system in the 3 countries including Rwanda, Congo and Uganda. This walk on foot takes 2 hours for both primary and secondary schools and 1hour for a nursery visit and you will be able interact with the management and students directly.

A VISIT TO EX-POACHERS’ COMMUNITIES

We assist guests who would like to visit local communities of formerly marginalized people who lived in the forest for many years. The guests will learn more about these people’s lives in the forest through their beautiful stories, dances and songs.as these people relied on bush meat through poaching, they will also present traditional materials they were using to trap animals, which was the only source of getting food in the forest. Any money you pay for the above specified walks benefits local people 80% and 20% goes to the developments of Local community tour in Gecko safaris  and a token of appreciation to the staff. These visit can be done in Akagera national park, Virunga national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Murchison fall national park and kidepo national park

 

LOCAL BEER BREWERY EXPERIENCE

With demonstration of making banana beer from the plantation to the freshly made beer, you will get to know how it tastes and enjoy the interaction with people involved. This tour takes about 2.5 hours.

LOCAL HILLS HIKKING

Gecko safaris assist the tourists to do the hike of local hills and mountains where the tourists’ experience why the North of Rwanda, The west of Congo DRC and the south of Uganda is called the Switzerland of African it is simply because it is the sector of a thousand hills. Gecko safaris provides them with hiking facilities: food and beverages, hiking gears, etc.

We recommend our clients to participate in this activity of basket and traditional mats weaving with women cooperatives as another way of supporting the community based tourism and during this time you can share experiences with local so that you can learn something from them.

BEE KEEPING EXPERIENCE

This project is very important for income generating to the community and useful to our lives. Suchas, curesa huge number of local disesase.during this walk you will get to know how honey is produced from the hive making until harvesting fresh honey.

VOLCANOE HIKING AND FACILITIES

Gecko offers karisimbi and bisoke hiking facilities (tents, portablemattress, sleeping bags, porters, and cooker, and fresh food, hot water bottles) andassist to get the entrance permit as one of numerous services they render to tourists. It is a bit pricey but worth it.

COW MILKING AND BUTTER CHURNING

Guests who would like to learn how local people milk their cows and get butter from milk are welcome in a local family to see this amazingexperience. You will get to participate in the activity while taking pictures.
