3 Days Big Five Safari in Uganda

Overview

3 day Big Five safari Uganda will take you to one of Uganda’s largest wildlife reserves, which was gazetted in 1926 and became a national park in 1962. The Murchison Falls are located in the northwestern region of the country and cover an area of 3,840 square kilometers. The park borders the important Ugandan towns of Masindi, Pakwach, Karuma, and Biso, among others.

Murchison Falls National Park will provide you with an exciting exposure to a magnificent wooden savannah with Budongo woodland, which is home to chimps that are tracked, and open savannah grasslands, which are home to a diverse range of species that may be seen on game drives. The Nile River flows through the park and into the Mediterranean Sea, and there are spectacular waterfalls that are a must-see for anybody visiting this magnificent park.

Our first stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the Kampala-Gulu highway will kick off our big five safari with rhino tracking. This normally takes approximately 2 hours, with more animals sighted such as bush bucks, warthogs, and the occasional leopard.

We will have lunch at Kabalega Dinners, surrounded by whistling accasias. Proceed through Masindi village to the magnificent Murchison Falls National Park. On the second and final day before departing for Kampala / Entebbe International Airport, game drives will be done in quest of the remaining three or four big five.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Murchison Falls National Park—Rhino tracking.

Our driver will meet you at your hotel in Kampala/Entebbe at 7:30 a.m. after breakfast, brief you on your safari, and begin your three-day tour. The journey will take us across the Kampala/Gulu highway, with a halt at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a 2-hour rhino tracking session. Other species to be seen include bush bucks, warthogs, and the rare leopard. Check out and grab lunch at Kabalega Dinners.

After lunch, go via the Kafu River bridge to Masindi and enter the park at the Kichumbanyobo gate. Baboons will welcome you as you enter the Budongo forest. After a one-hour drive, arrive to the top of the Murchison Falls for relaxation and photo-taking of the scenic view.

Check out at the top of the falls and return to your lodge. We have two options: sleep at the lodges on the river’s southern side or cross the Nile ferry to sleep on the northern bank.

Accommodation and dinner options (to pick from):
Murchison River Lodge
Fort Murchison – Paraa Safari Lodge.

Day 2: Game drive and afternoon Nile boat cruise.

After an early breakfast, join the early risers in the open Savannah grasslands. We will witness lions, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, leopards, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of birds before returning to our lodge to relax, have lunch, and await the 2:30pm boat ride on the Nile to watch buffaloes, elephants, and hippos drinking water in and around the river.

The black and white colombus monkeys can’t be ignored as they jump through the tree branches along the riverbank. Crocodiles will be sighted along the river’s rocks, followed by the breathtaking vista of the Murchison waterfall. Return to our lodge for dinner and stay.

Day 3: Early game drive and return to Kampala.

Another game drive as we conclude our trek to Murchison Falls. Relaxed after seeing practically all of the creatures, we are now using our eyes and a few cameras to catch the last moments. Check out and return to Kampala/Entebbe Airport for your return journey.

End of your 3-day big five safari. Uganda trip
NOTE: To get the most of your safari, I recommend spending a night on the Northern bank because it allows us to go on a game drive on the arrival day, for a total of three game drives.
