Habinyanja Gorilla Family

The Habinyanja Gorilla Family derives its name from the Rukiga word “Nyanja,” meaning a water body, reflecting the swampy area where the group was first sighted.

History and Leadership Changes

The history of the Habinyanja family is a testament to the complex social structure of gorillas. Initially led by Mugurusi, the group experienced a leadership transition after his death. Two silverbacks, Rwansigazi and Mwirima, shared leadership for a time but eventually separated due to differing personalities.

Mwirima, known for his calm demeanor, broke away to form the Rushegura family, while Rwansigazi retained leadership of the Habinyanja group.

Currently, the group consists of approximately 17 members, including silverbacks, adult females, juveniles, and infants. Their dynamics and interactions provide trekkers with a captivating glimpse into gorilla behavior.
