Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve, which is located between Lake Albert to the west and the blue mountains of the Congo,  sits within the rift valley in the albertine region.

The reserve covers an area approximately 87 square miles, which is equivalent to about 224 square kilometers. This reserve is a diverse natural area with expansive savannah plains, scenic escarpments, and lush woodlands.

Established for conservation in the 1960s and declared a wildlife reserve in 2002, Kabwoya’s unique positioning and protected environment make it a rich sanctuary for wildlife and ecotourism activities.

Kabwoya is home to a remarkable variety of animals, like the Large herds of Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, buffalo and bushbuck roam the plains, while primates like vervet and colobus monkeys inhabit the woodlands.

Unique fossil sites can also be found here, with some dating back to prehistoric times and offering a rare glimpse into Uganda’s ancient biodiversity. The reserve is also an excellent birding destination, with over 460 bird species, including both resident and migratory birds.

Location and Access to Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

The reserve is approximately 240 kilometers (about 150 miles) from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and is easily accessible by road.

From Kampala, visitors can take the Kampala-Hoima road, followed by the Hoima-Kabwoya road, which takes about 4 to 5 hours.

Alternatively, the reserve can be reached from Queen Elizabeth National Park, which takes a 5-hour drive through scenic landscapes.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to explore Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is during the dry seasons in the months of June to September and December to February.

During these months, wildlife is more concentrated around water sources, making it easier to spot animals, and trails are drier and safer for hiking or biking.
